This is a bibliographic review about the effectiveness and limitations of the several pharmacological therapies available for the antiinflammatory treatment of bronchial asthma, and the need for the development of new drugs in this field.
Although there are many drugs for the treatment of asthma, the morbidity and mortality associated with this disease have increased in recent years. The actual recommendations for the chronic management of asthma are based in the introduction of antiinflarnmatory agents since the early stages of the disease. Toe great amount of cells and endogenous mediators participating in the pathophysiology of the airways inflammation has become a problem for developing a sufficiently secure and efficacious drug.
Over the past years, inhaled glucocorticoids have become established as a cornerstone of maintenance therapy because of their demonstrated clinical efficacy, but there have been problems related to the inhalation technique and the concerns about side effects, which can affect the response to therapy. Toe other drugs currently available have limited antiinflammatory activity. Toe recent development of antileukotriene drugs brings hope to achieve a better control of the inflammation in asthma.
The primary care physician must know the importance of an adequate and rational prescribing of the antiinflammatory drugs in the ambulatory setting for the chronic treatment of asthma.
